“I continue to want to explore animals, exotic and common, in unusual and discordant combinations. And this past year, because I was stuck in the northern hemisphere for the whole of 2020 due to COVID, I was enchanted to experience all of the seasons, their colours, smells and sounds. Autumn especially, when everything around me was red and brown, got me thinking about how I wouldn’t be able to spot a fox in the woods if it wasn’t for his white bits; thus began the interest in camouflage in animals and in concepts of disguise and becoming one with your environment.”

Symmetry is my favourite work, primarily because of the composition; the symmetricity of it and the large soft curve that the horns create. Somehow a sense of gentle movement is present too. I also like the colour, the sienna, pink, and red are slightly uncomfortable together, but softened by the white of the scimitar oryx. I find this painting very calming.”

“My training is in printmaking, specifically copper etching, so I was always drawn to monochrome colourways. My love of colour has slowly evolved and I now love its power an endless diversity. My method of working has also change hugely; I paint more like I am making a print than like I am making a painting, I use line like I would with an etching, to darken or lighten my animals. I have become more intent on detail and movement, and more confident in my abilities. My love of gouache has never wavered.”

“In the case of this show, I focused on partnering animals of similar colour or pattern, the aim being to emphasize their similarities. I started by researching animals of a specific colour and went from there. This year I wanted to explore less common birds and animals, like different breeds of monkey, kangaroos, red pandas, and lemurs.”
